The Hopi Cultural Center, located high on Second Mesa, offers not only a stellar selection of Hopi art—from katsina dolls and baskets to pottery and textiles—but also a sparkling motel and a restaurant that serves up local delicacies. Fuel up on genuine Hopi blue corn pancakes for breakfast before venturing into Hopiland. Tuba City Trading Post has been selling fine Navajo crafts since 1906. 8 NAVAJO NATION The Navajo Nation has the greatest number of surviving trading posts in the US. In a land where modern banks can still be hard to find, some trading posts also provide safe storage for family valuables passed through generations. And they’re a great place for locals and visitors alike to catch up on local happenings. “Much like the days of old, the trading post is a community hub for commerce as well as kinship, something the Navajo call ‘Nihii` naalye`he ba` hoogaan,’ which roughly translates as ‘the place where our treasures are held,’ ” says Sheri Burnham, a fifth-generation trader and a Navajo. Bruce and Virginia Burnham and their daughter Sheri serve local Navajo people with a venue to conduct business, shop or just visit with one another at their R. B. Burnham & Company Trading Post in Sanders. In addition to the well-known Hubbell and Cameron trading posts, head deeper into the “rez” to find more trading post gems. Tucked into the base of Shonto Canyon just a few miles east of Highway 98 the Shonto Trading Post still looks much like it did when it was founded in 1915. Shonto is known for its basketry, rugs and Navajo pottery, as well as other traditional Navajo arts, but no longer offers pawn services. Like other Navajo trading posts, it is operated as a venue for local artists to showcase their work, and as a general store. Tuba City Trading Post in Tuba City also hasn’t changed much from its 1906 opening. The octagonal-shaped emporium offers everything a local—or visitor—would want. In addition to Navajo art, this trading post also offers Hopi art, since it lies along the border between the two nations. The headquarters of the Navajo Nation’s tribally owned trading posts is Navajo Arts & Crafts Enterprise in Window Rock, which has additional shops in Chinle, Cameron and Kayenta. The aisles and cases of this downtown store are packed with handcrafted jewelry, textiles, baskets, clothing and myriad other items. 8 WHITE MOUNTAIN & SAN CARLOS APACHE TRIBES Apache artisans also have tribally owned venues where they can offer their pieces for sale. The Nohwike’ Bágowa Cultural Center and Museum, located in the Fort Apache Historic Park on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, is housed in a BOTH: R. B.
