FUN for KIDS The Arizona Science Center, with a planetarium, large-screen theater and such exhibits as a huge sneezing nose, is so much fun that adults asked for their own night there. Kids can interact with tide-pool creatures or be surrounded by glass walls of water at the Sea Life Arizona aquarium in Tempe. The wet slides and rides at the area’s three destination water parks—Big Surf Water Park, Golfland SunSplash and Wet ’N’ Wild Phoenix— keep everyone cool. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix caters to the 10 and under set with an array of playtime possibilities, while Mesa’s Arizona Museum for Youth encourages budding artists. The Arizona Museum of Natural History, also in Mesa, has the largest collection of dinosaur fossils in Arizona. Mechanically inclined kids get a kick out of the Hall of Flame Fire Museum, featuring firefighting equipment through the ages, and the Commemorative Air Force Museum, displaying everything from whirlybirds to fighter planes. Phoenix Zoo, voted one of the nation’s top five zoos for kids, and Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium, with a flume ride through its Pacific reef tank, are additional crowd pleasers. SEA LIFE ARIZONA AQUARIUM/MICHAEL GING Educational fun awaits at Tempe’s Sea Life Arizona aquarium and The Children’s Museum of Phoenix (right). RESORTS Catering to the entire family with top-rate restaurants, spas, golf courses, pools and educational programs, Greater Phoenix’s resorts run the gamut of price, setting and style. Many offer thrilling ways to get out and enjoy the state’s sunny weather, from playing a PGA Tour golf course at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess to learning to “surf” in the new FlowRider water experience at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. Indoors, some of the newer properties on the scene envelop their guests in sleek, modern styling, such as The Saguaro in Scottsdale or Hotel Palomar in downtown Phoenix, while others, such as Litchfield Park’s Wigwam Golf Resort and Phoenix’s Arizona Biltmore, blend historic character with state-of-the-art facilities.
