Its mild, sunny climate and dramatic scenery have made Southern Arizona a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can choose their terrain and difficulty level, and the area’s many hiking clubs welcome visitors. Hop on the Arizona Trail in the Huachuca Mountains, a terrific span of the 800-mile-long trail that reaches from Mexico to Utah. Tucson has been ranked by Bicycling magazine as one of the top cycling cities in the US. The annual El Tour de Tucson attracts top international competitors, and miles of mountain-bike trails have made Saguaro National Park East particularly popular with fattire enthusiasts. Sierra Vista appeals to cyclists as well, with multi-use paths throughout the city for street riders and easy access to off-road trails for mountain bikers. Rock climbers flock to the rugged Dragoon Mountains and, in the equestrian country near Sonoita, combined horseback-riding and wine-tasting tours attract urban cowpokes.
