D DEVIL’S HIGHWAY Dedicated in 1926, the Clifton to Springerville stretch of road in eastern Arizona was officially named Route 666. Between hairpin turns and beastly numbers, it soon earned the nickname of the Devil’s Highway. It’s now US Route 191, the 123-mile Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, named for the nearby route the Spanish explorer took in 1540. Designate a driver and enjoy its devilishly beautiful desert to alpine forest views. Padre Kino, an Italian-born Jesuit priest, rancher and explorer, came to what is now Sonora, Mexico, in 1687, establishing 24 missions and visitas (visiting stations) in both Mexico and Arizona. See his Southern Arizona legacy at Tumacácori National Historical Park in Tumacácori and Mission San Xavier del Bac near Tucson, two of the missions he founded. E EUSEBIO FRANCISCO KINO Catch a folklórico performance at one of the state’s many Hispanic heritage festivals. Flowing, vibrant dresses, staccato dance steps and lively music are the hallmarks of this Mexican cultural gem that impresses audiences at Latino heritage celebrations throughout the state. For top-notch baile folklórico (which translates to “folkoric dance”), accompanied by world-class mariachi bands, check the performance schedule of the annual spring La Frontera’s Tucson International Mariachi Conference. o FOLKLÓRICO DANCE GRAND CANYON Carved by the Colorado River, this geological wonder is 277 miles long and up to 18 miles across. Whether hiking, rafting or viewing, most visitors access it through Grand Canyon National Park, but some choose a more remote experience via the adjacent Havasupai or Hualapai tribal lands—the latter of which includes the unique, scenic Skywalk. The park’s South Rim is abuzz with accommodations and interpretive sites, while the North Rim offers a quieter interaction. H HIKING Lace up your boots, grab some water and get out there. Arizona has thousands of miles of hiking trails, from gentle loops through cacti in the low desert to lung-busting, above-the-timberline treks up mountain peaks. The granddaddy of all? The Arizona Trail, an 800-mile National Scenic Trail that crosses the state from Mexico to Utah. I INDIAN TRIBES From Apache to Zuni, 22 American Indian tribes call Arizona home. Celebrate their heritages with a visit to places like the Navajo Nation or the White Mountain Apache lands, where you’ll find events, cultural centers and landmarks. Or head to the Gila River and Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian communities, which offer everything from museums and horseback riding to casinos, golf and fine dining. 6 Arizona 2013 Official State Visitor’s Guide The afternoon sun makes Grand Canyon views especially dramatic.
