AMERICAN INDIAN HISTORY Navajo National Monument preserves dwellings built into soaring, pine-shrouded ochre cliffs by the Ancestral Puebloans— forebears of the modern Hopi, among others—as does Canyon de Chelly National Monument, where two rim drives afford vistas of these ancient homes. The Sinagua settled the volcanic area around Flagstaff, as seen at Wupatki National Monument, notable for its high-rise pueblo, and at Walnut Canyon National Monument, a lushly forested canyon with protected niches. The high-elevation volcanic ﬁelds around Springerville in the White Mountains were also settled by the Ancestral Puebloans, who created Casa Malpais’ unusual ﬁssure pueblos.
