For three years after it opened in 1909, Yuma High School held classes in the newly abandoned Yuma Territorial Prison. When the Yuma High football team played Phoenix’s Coyotes and won, the Coyotes called them “criminals.” The team officially adopted the name in 1917.

In Yuma, the Sanguinetti House Museum is the only Arizona Historical Society branch that has live birds— including peacocks and parrots—in its collections. On the outskirts of town, the Camel Farm features not only the hump-backed dromedaries, but such exotic creatures as oryxes (a type of antelope) and Patagonian cavies (in the guinea pig family). Camels played a role in the region’s past, and Quartzsite’s Hi Jolly Monument is a tribute to camel driver Hadji Ali, enlisted in an unsuccessful mid-19th century attempt to employ the desert-savvy animals in Southwest military efforts. In Oatman, a former gold mining town along Route 66, wild burros left over from the town’s prospecting days roam the streets and look to visitors for food (conveniently sold there). Farther east on Route 66, near the town of Valentine, Keepers of the Wild Nature Park is devoted to rescuing abused and abandoned creatures, from ostriches and coatimundi to wolves and tigers.
