Arizona’s West Coast COURTESY THE GRAND CANYON SKYWALK DEVELOPMENT AMERICAN INDIAN CULTURE The Quechan and Cocopah people were among the original settlers of the lower Colorado River basin. Today, both tribes have reservations near Yuma, as well as small museums that explore their heritage. The Mohave and Chemehuevi, whose legacies in the area date back thousands of years, form the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) with members of the Hopi and Navajo nations, who were relocated to the region in 1865. The CRIT Museum in Parker showcases cultural artifacts of the tribes, and the collective is best known today for its riverfront BlueWater Resort & Casino. You can also learn about the Mohave and the region’s other native peoples at the Mohave Museum of History and Arts in Kingman. The Hualapai, whose tribal headquarters are in Peach Springs to the northwest, include the Grand Canyon Skywalk and rafting excursions on the Colorado River among their tourism enterprises. The clear-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk offers a bird’s-eye view of the canyon floor. OFFBEAT AZ Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, one of the most glamorous Hollywood couples of the 1930s, were married in Kingman on March 29, 1939. all eras, including the pre-pavement ones. On the flat plain east of Kingman, Hackberry General Store proclaims its Route 66 pride with a shiny 1957 Corvette and vintage gas pumps, and Mildred’s Frontier Cafe in Truxton is still open for business. The last town on this uninterrupted portion of the road, Seligman revels in its Mother Road heritage with businesses like the Snow Cap Drive-in. Two Route 66 attractions worth exploring are Keepers of the Wild, an educational wildlife park near Valentine; and, just past Peach Springs, Grand Canyon Caverns, a cave system so dry that civil supplies for the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis were stored here. Today, visitors can stay overnight in the caverns in “the world’s deepest hotel room.” ARIZONA AmericA’s route to GrAnd cAnyon West®, Home Historic doWntoWn WitH four museums HeArt of Historic route 66 of tHe skyWAlk® K AN GM ARIZONA IN RO UT E VIS ITOR CEN ER T 866-427-7866 GoKinGman.com inG inGman 84 Arizona 2013 Official State Visitor’s Guide http://www.GOKINGMAN.COM http://www.bullheadchamber.com http://www.GOKINGMAN.COM http://www.bullheadchamber.com
