RICHARD CUMMINS Cactus blooms at Tucson Botanical Gardens XERISCAPE GARDENS The desert is beautiful, and water is precious. That’s why Arizona has been at the fore of Xeriscaping, or low water-use gardening, for decades. Tucson’s Tohono Chul Park and Tucson Botanical Gardens, as well as the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix are abloom with demonstration gardens and Xeriscaping classes. Y YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON STATE HISTORIC PARK You did not want to commit a crime in Arizona between 1876 and 1909. You’d likely wind up at Yuma Territorial Prison, an imposing adobe-andiron fortress on the Colorado River. Tour the prison to find out what life was like for those early devotees of gated communities through exhibits and a peek inside the chilling solitary confinement cell. MOREY K. MILBRADT q ZOOS Native—and not so native—fauna abound in Arizona’s many zoos. Just to name a few: Kid-friendly Phoenix Zoo has a renowned conservation program; Tucson’s ArizonaSonora Desert Museum offers desert animals, plants and natural history; and Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde lets you get up close and personal with tigers, pythons and more. Trek beneath the earth to see more of Southern Arizona’s wonders. In Bisbee, don a miner’s headlamp to tour the historic Queen Mine, where copper was mined for nearly a century. Near Benson, Kartchner Caverns State Park is a “living” cave where spectacular formations are still growing. Outside Vail, Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a dry cave once used as shelter by ancient peoples. U UNDERGROUND az V VICTORIAN HOMES Downtown Prescott is aflutter with restored, historic Victorian homes dating to the 1870s. Stroll Mount Vernon Street to see a veritable beauty pageant of porches, turrets, arches, cornices and brackets, all in Easter-egg hues. Visit during 4th of July, Halloween and Christmas, when the ’hood goes all out with decorations. Arizona’s high desert terroir of warm days, cool nights and limestone soils has proven to produce great reds, whites, rosés and dessert wines. Taste your way through the state’s 48 licensed and bonded wineries, most of which are in Sonoita/Elgin and Willcox in Southern Arizona and the Verde Valley (also dubbed the Verde Valley Wine Trail) of North Central Arizona. W WINE View Arizona wildlife in beautiful natural settings at Tucson’s Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. arizonaguide.com 9 RON NIEBRUGGE http://www.arizonaguide.com
