North Central Arizona ARCHITECTURE Created in the 1970s by Paolo Soleri, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright, Arcosanti still draws acolytes to the desert near Cordes Junction to experience sustainable urban living. Also influenced by Wright, Marguerite Brunswig Staude designed Sedona’s Chapel of the Holy Cross, which juts dramatically out of a red rock spur some 200 feet off the ground. Several hillside mining towns yield architectural treasures. Clifton’s historic district has some of Arizona’s best-preserved examples of Territorial architecture, while poured-concrete structures distinguish Miami (twin town to Globe). Perhaps most fascinating is Jerome, with several buildings—including the town’s jail—perched precariously on the mountainside. Far more characteristic of the Midwest than the Southwest, Prescott has a leafy town square and includes many beautifully restored Queen Anne homes among its more than 500 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. COWBOY CULTURE Prescott, Arizona’s first (1864) Territorial capital (you can view the governor’s log “mansion” at the town’s Sharlot Hall Museum) is home to Whiskey Row, once lined with saloons and brothels, and to The Phippen Museum, where the frontier is captured on canvas. Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde preserves the military installation established in 1871 to protect the Verde Valley from Indian raids. The forests and rises around Payson were popularized by Zane Grey, who had a cabin near town; a replica home (the original was destroyed by fire) holds a museum dedicated to the author. Cowboy OFFBEAT AZ Goats and llamas are raised at the Ranch at Fossil Creek in Strawberry, near the Tonto National Forest. The former produce goat cheese, fudge and soap, and the latter are available to take visitors on hikes through the woods. ARIZONA OFFICE OF TOURISM Sedona’s Chapel of the Holy Cross rises 90 feet from its red rock foundation. Artists of America got its start at Sedona’s Cowboy Club restaurant, and the Sedona Heritage Museum displays posters of films that used the town’s rugged scenery as backdrop. Pure family fun, Blazin’ M Ranch Wild West Adventure Town in Cottonwood puts on a chuckwagon dinner show in a reconstructed Western town 11 months of the year (they are closed in January). NICK BEREZENKO RAILS & ROADS Among the state’s most picturesque routes, the Red Rock Scenic Byway (Highway 179) curves off Interstate 17 in the Verde Valley toward Sedona and past such striking geological formations as Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock. Highway 89A offers two particularly dramatic stretches: Between Flagstaff and Sedona it winds through Oak Creek Canyon, a lushly forested river gorge along the Mogollon Rim; and between Prescott and Jerome it traverses the Black Hills in a series of switchbacks before beginning its curvier Experience the Verde Valley’s military history at Fort Verde State Historic Park. 90 Arizona 2013 Official State Visitor’s Guide
