minutes southeast of Tucson. Paying tribute to the
area's equestrian roots, Sonoita Vineyards paired up
with the Arizona Horseback Experience to offer a
scenic ride followed by lunch and a wine tasting. One
way to reach Alcantara Vineyards, with its beautiful
Tuscan-style farmhouse along central Arizona's
Verde Valley Wine Trail, is to take a kayak trip with
Sedona Adventure Tours down the Verde River.
Grapes have long been grown in the Willcox area in
southeast Arizona, but the Willcox Wine Trail has
only recently begun opening tasting rooms. Three of
them-Keeling Schaefer, Carlson Creek and Flying
Leap-are in a historic downtown railroad district,
home to the Rex Allen Arizona Cowboy Museum.

Wine arrived in the region that became
Arizona long before margaritas did. Spanish
missionaries began producing sacramental
wine in New Spain in the 16th century.
Following this, there was a long hiatus until
the 1970s, when modern winemaking began
taking hold in the state, but we're making
up for lost time. Arizona has begun to be
recognized as a great grape escape, with three
distinct areas for touring and tasting-and
some fun ways to experience each collection
of vineyards and wineries.
