PRESIDENTIAL PLATES
The state's restaurants have also found
favor with presidents. Bill Clinton sampled
a bean tostada, birria taco, chile relleno,
chicken enchilada and beef tamale at Mi
Nidito in Tucson, and at Poncho's in Phoenix, he had the plate now known as the
Presidential Special: mini tostadas, chimichangas, tacos and green corn tamales.
The next time you visit Poncho's, sit where
Clinton sat. It's easy to find his table. The
president is painted on the wall there, enjoying his meal.
Clinton isn't the only president to
enjoy Sonoran-fare standards in Phoenix.
George W. Bush ate two enchiladas, rice
and beans at Tee Pee Mexican Food in central Phoenix during his time in office, and
Barack Obama ordered a plate of fajitas at
Macayo's Mexican Kitchen, also in central
Phoenix.
THE GRAND CANYON STATE
GOES TO WASHINGTON
Arizona's affiliation with US presidents
hasn't been a one-way street-throughout
the years, the state has made an impact on
the White House, too. Wines from Southern
Arizona's Callaghan Vineyards have been
served three times at the White House. In
1996, the 1993 Buena Suerte Cuvée accompanied the White House dinner for the
Democratic National Committee; in 2000,
the 1998 Buena Suerte Cuvée accompanied the state dinner for the prime minister of India; and in 2006, the Claire's 2004
was served at the dinner honoring retiring US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day
O'Connor.
In recent history, Arizona has also represented the nation during the holidays.
In 2008, a decorated egg from Hickman's
Family Farms in Buckeye became the National Commemorative Easter Egg, and in
2009, an 85-foot-tall blue spruce harvested
from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest near the town of Alpine graced the lawn
of the US Capitol. az
From her home in Greater Phoenix-
which has never been visited by a US
president-Teresa Bitler writes about
historic Arizona places, American Indian
culture and scenic Southwest adventures.

THE STARS OF ARIZONA
DeGrazia Gallery
in the Sun
Though not heads of state, Arizona has had
its share of national stars.
Born and raised in Phoenix, Lynda Carter
was an all-Arizonan girl-attending Arizona
State University and winning the titles of
Miss Phoenix, Miss Arizona and even Miss
USA. By 1976, she became the iconic face
of the titular female hero in the television
series Wonder Woman.
Originally Vincent Furnier, Alice Cooper
became notorious as the front man for the
band with the same name. Before becoming
the Godfather of Shock Rock, Cooper
attended high school in Phoenix. Keeping
his ties to Greater Phoenix, he broadcasts
his radio show Nights with Alice Cooper from
Phoenix and owns the Alice Cooper'stown
restaurant downtown.
Born in Morenci before Arizona was even
a state, Ettore "Ted" DeGrazia enrolled at
The University of Arizona before winding up
in Bisbee to focus on his art. Influenced by
the Sonoran Desert, his work was frequently
featured in Arizona Highways. His selfbuilt studio and gallery, DeGrazia Gallery
in the Sun, still stands today in the Tucson
Foothills.
Drawing from his home in Paradise
Valley, Bil Keane is best known for his
one-panel comic Family Circus, which has
been putting a smile on faces across the
nation for more than half a century. Since it
premiered, the comic has been syndicated
in more than 1,500 newspapers, making it
the most widely distributed panel today. A
statue commemorating Keane and his iconic
comic is slated to be erected at Scottsdale's
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.
Arizona also counts among its current
or former residents such famous faces as
actors Rex Allen, David Spade and Emma
Stone. Musicians with Arizona roots include
Glen Campbell, Linda Ronstadt, The Gin
Blossoms and Michelle Branch, and writers
Stephenie Meyer and Erma Bombeck have
both called the Grand Canyon State home.
