GUIDED RIDES Forget the typical nose-to-tail trail-riding experiences you may have had in the past. At Koli Equestrian Center in Chandler, you can walk and trot next to friends and family members as American Indian wranglers guide you through 2,400 acres of wide-open Sonoran Desert Gila River Indian lands. The free-ride format also allows you to ask questions about the Akimel O'odham and Pee Posh people who reside near the Gila River, their history, and the flora and fauna you see along the way. In addition to the traditional horseback ride, Koli offers a Margarita Sunset Ride, a Dine & Ride option that ends with an outdoor steak dinner and wagon rides. You'll gain a whole new perspective on one of the West's most iconic landscapes when you take off with Monument Valley Hot Air Balloons. As you soar above the spires of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, your Navajo pilot points out the valley's most recognizable landmarks, including East Mitten, West Mitten, Merrick Butte and Mitchell Mesa. Following a post-flight breakfast, you'll embark on the second half of your adventure-a backcountry jeep tour with a Navajo guide who shares the legends and history of his people. Depending on availability, you may also be able to tour an authentic hogan or watch a weaving demonstration. 6 Arizona 2014 Official State Visitor's Guide INTO THE CANYONS Capture the beauty of slot canyons around the Navajo Nation with Adventurous Antelope Canyon Photo Tours. The company's Navajo photographers can assist you-regardless of your photographic experience or the type of camera you own-in creating the perfect shot. Several tours are available, including multi-canyon excursions and a night shoot. Guides recommend a visit to the secluded Owl, Rattlesnake and Mountain Sheep canyons. In these private slot canyons you'll have the opportunity to photograph beautiful windswept sandstone walls without the crowds you might encounter in some of the better-known canyons. If you do choose to tour the popular Upper Antelope or Lower Antelope canyons, don't worry-your guides work around other tour groups to ensure you get that perfect shot. With Hualapai River Runners, you experience the Grand Canyon by land, water and air. The adventure begins at tribally operated Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs and continues with a scenic 22-mile bus ride along an old wagon trail to the Colorado River. After a lunch break, enjoy a hike to a natural waterfall before taking a helicopter to Grand Canyon West, home of the Skywalk (additional charge).
