Tucson & Southern Arizona JILL RICHARDS NORMA JEAN GARGASZ spooks and ghouls try to scare the bejeebies out of you during October's Nightfall at Old Tucson, a Western theme park. Fall launches the performing arts seasons of the Arizona Theatre Company, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Opera, Broadway in Tucson and UApresents. Dozens of theater groups and music ensembles in Tucson, Sierra Vista and Bisbee show the depth of the creative community. There's foodie fun, too. Test your palate in determining the top cocktail at Tucson's Explore the historic mining town of Bisbee. GEORGE STOCKING Downtown Tucson's famous Hotel Congress October World Margarita Championship, or simply taste traditional Sonoran-style Mexican food from long-time restaurants in South Tucson. Safford's September SalsaFest pits the restaurants of the Arizona Salsa Trail-about a dozen Mexican restaurants along the scenic Old West Highway-against one another in some friendly, spicy competition. The town of Sierra Vista boasts a broad sampling of international cuisine styles, from Italian to Vietnamese to Mexican, or you can sample American Indian fare at Desert Rain Café in Sells on the Tohono O'odham Reservation west of Tucson. Golf is indeed a winter sport in these parts. There are dozens of courses, including desert layouts and championship designs, that provide challenging play. Top professionals agree; they come to Marana in February for the exciting Accenture Match Play Championship. Visitors find our pleasant winters ideal for hiking, fishing, off-roading and horseback riding, but there's fun in the snow, too. It's not unheard of to get in some downhill skiing or snowboarding at Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, then head down the mountain for a round of golf-all in the same day. Hannagan Meadow in the White Mountains is a hot spot for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. REGIONAL ROAD TRIP Take a trip to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. 62 Arizona 2014 Official State Visitor's Guide Yes, this is the desert, but grasslands and rolling hills along the Patagonia-Sonoita Scenic Road show another side of arid scenery. The quiet beauty of craggy mountains, scrubby woodland and sweeping vistas on State Routes 83 and 82 between Interstates 10 and 19 conjure images of cowboys, ranchers and Old West adventure. The route is lined by wildlife preserves and outdoor recreation areas for hiking, birding, boating, horseback riding and swimming. It provides easy access to historic places such as the ghost town of Kentucky Camp, the early 20th-century Patagonia train station, historical homes dotting downtown Nogales and the 19th-century Empire Ranch house. Imbibe in Sonoita-Elgin, Arizona's largest wine country, and take in the works of the artist colony in Patagonia. A little past the southern end of the drive is Arizona's major port into Mexico. Any time is good for taking in the scenery that appears in many movies, most famously Oklahoma. The landscape greens up once the summer afternoon rains begin.
