LIVING HISTORY
GEORGE STOCKING
History buffs can visit fascinating and enlightening sites any time of the year. Stories of the earliest human settlers are told
in a 700-year-old Salado home along the
Turkey Creek Cliff Dwelling Trail (most accessible in spring and fall) near the town of
Klondyke and the remains of a Hohokam
pit house in Tucson's Fort Lowell Park. See
remnants such as bones and teeth of Ice
Age mammals at the Murray Springs Clovis
Site near Sierra Vista. Find rock art along
the San Pedro River's Petroglyph Discovery
Trail and at the Blue Crossing Campground
near Blue. Other sites include Mogollon
pictographs at Council Rocks in the craggy
Dragoon Mountains (high-clearance vehicles recommended) and Hohokam petroglyphs at Signal Hill Picnic Area in Saguaro
National Park. The Amerind Foundation
in Dragoon, Colossal Cave Mountain Park
in Vail, the Arizona State Museum in Tucson, the Tohono O'odham Nation Cultural
Center & Museum in Topawa and the San
Carlos Apache Cultural Center in Peridot
exhibit artifacts left by early American Indians and reveal today's tribal nations and
communities.
Spanish colonization is told of at the
Catholic settlements of Mission San Xavier
del Bac south of Tucson and Tumacacori
National Historic Park in Rio Rico and at
the military installations of Tubac Presidio
State Historic Park and the reconstructed
Presidio San Agustín del Tucson.
Keep an eye out during
hikes-petroglyphs can be
found throughout the region.
