baskets and Katsina carvings-on a guided
or self-guided tour of the Hopi Arts Trail.
Signs of violent geologic activity are
everywhere. Young volcanic fields cover
the Colorado Plateau. This includes
Flagstaff's San Francisco Peaks, one of
which-Humphreys Peak-is the highest
point in Arizona. Bill Williams Mountain,
near Williams, is a group of lava domes. One
volcanic occurrence 900 years ago is preserved as Sunset Crater Volcano National
Monument, where you can walk past lava
flows and admire the massive cinder cone.
Summer interpretive hikes tell its story. In
the Coconino National Forest you can walk
down a dark, cold lava river cave (the access
road is closed in winter).
Primeval life left its mark in Petrified
Forest National Park, where you can walk
or drive past the remains of a 20-millionyear-old woodland. Summer ranger
programs and cultural demonstrations
show how this ancient forest is still a living
treasure. Outside of Tuba City lie fossilized
dinosaur tracks. Tour 50,000-year-old Meteor Crater, a 550-foot hole in the desert
near Winslow pounded out by a speeding
meteor. az
