DOMINIC ROMER Hike, sunbathe and swim in lush Fossil Creek, south of Flagstaff. baskets and Katsina carvings-on a guided or self-guided tour of the Hopi Arts Trail. Signs of violent geologic activity are everywhere. Young volcanic fields cover the Colorado Plateau. This includes Flagstaff's San Francisco Peaks, one of which-Humphreys Peak-is the highest point in Arizona. Bill Williams Mountain, near Williams, is a group of lava domes. One volcanic occurrence 900 years ago is preserved as Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, where you can walk past lava flows and admire the massive cinder cone. Summer interpretive hikes tell its story. In the Coconino National Forest you can walk down a dark, cold lava river cave (the access road is closed in winter). Primeval life left its mark in Petrified Forest National Park, where you can walk or drive past the remains of a 20-millionyear-old woodland. Summer ranger programs and cultural demonstrations show how this ancient forest is still a living treasure. Outside of Tuba City lie fossilized dinosaur tracks.
