Enjoy the outdoors on
or above Lake Havasu.
REGIONAL ROAD TRIP
Small towns, big river, plentiful
wildlife and outdoor recreation sites
line the 130-mile State Route 95
from Quartzsite to Bullhead City.
After skirting the scenic Plomosa
Mountains heading north from
Quartzsite, you'll follow along the
Colorado River through Parker,
home of Parker Dam, the deepest
in the world; past Buckskin
Mountain, River Island, Cattail
Cove and Lake Havasu state parks
with lots of outdoor recreation
facilities; and into Lake Havasu
City, the major access city to
Lake Havasu and home of the real
London Bridge, which was moved
here and reassembled piece by
piece in 1971.
State Route 95 merges with
Interstate 40, but you can hook up
with it again past Topock, at the
western end of Historic Route 66
through Arizona. You'll have access
to the Havasu National Wildlife
Refuge and spectacular Topock
Gorge and drive through the Fort
Mojave Indian Reservation, ending
at Bullhead City. Stop by the
Colorado River Historical Society
Museum.
spring, attracting all manner of pollinating
birds and butterflies. The Ahakhav Tribal
Preserve near Parker offers birdwatching,
as well as a beach area for water play. For
a pair of expert eyes to help you spy wildlife, take the fall and winter guided hikes
around Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. Try
to find bighorn sheep in the two-day Arizona Game and Fish Department workshop that includes a Colorado River boat
ride near its sheep habitat. az
