Illinois Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 156) KAREN HIRSCH WESTERN John Deere Pavilion ADVENTURES IN RIVER COUNTRY Bounded by the Mississippi River on the west and the Illinois River on the east, the Western part of the state is known as River Country. It seems only fitting that the Great River Road winds alongside the region. In Moline get a better appreciation for farming at the John Deere Pavilion and ply the waters of the Mississippi on the Celebration Belle riverboat. Get a taste of Sweden (and Swedish meatballs!) in Bishop Hill, a historic rural village that’s still populated by descendants of the original 1846 founders. At Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island learn about the famed warrior at the Hauberg Indian Museum. Delve into Nauvoo’s fascinating Mormon history at the Joseph Smith Historic Site, homestead of the Mormon prophet. While in town try the fruit wine at Baxter’s Vineyards & Winery, the oldest winery in Illinois. Farther along the Great River Road is Quincy, known for its impressive architecture. Other Western must-sees include the Peoria RiverFront, Wildlife Prairie State Park in Hanna City and the birthplace home of writer Carl Sandburg in Galesburg.
