We’ve rounded up some of the best attractions not too far off of Illinois’ major interstates that just might tempt you to take a break from the road. I-94 Gurnee Highland Park ROBERT GARCIA Glencoe n Illinois, Glenview Evanston I-94 generally runs northsouth through the northeastern part of the state, passing urban and suburban areas that are particularly interesting along the stretch between Chicago and the Wisconsin state line. Evanston is a happening college town, home to the esteemed Northwestern University, along with interesting shops and colorful ethnic restaurants. Stroll the Northwestern campus and you’ll discover the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, featuring photography, film and video exhibits, and an outdoor sculpture garden. Let the kids stretch their legs (and their imaginations) at Kohl Children’s Museum in Glenview, where little ones can do everything from making take-home artwork to scrambling through fun mazes. Take a nature walk at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, an oasis of greenery in the northern suburbs that’s home to 20-plus gardens, ranging from the wild Midwest prairie to a romantic English garden. Pack a picnic and enjoy music under the stars at the summertime Ravinia Festival in Highland Park. This lovely outdoor music venue presents big-name performers that range from pop to classical and is the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Gurnee offers loads of fun for the family. Do some power shopping at Gurnee Mills, with i more than 200 manufacturer outl e t s t o r e s . A t Six Flags Great America take a spin on the wild thrill rides, then dive into water park fun at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. Located nearby is KeyLime Cove, a new water park resort featuring an indoor wave pool and tube slides.
