Illinois Travel Guide 2009 - (Page 8) Top to Bottom: A typical day at the Lincoln Herndon Law Offices, entrance to the Lincoln Depot where the president departed for Washington, the Old State Capitol was the site of Lincoln’s famed House Divided speech until they left for the White House. The Lincoln Home is located in a four-block historic neighborhood that looks much as it did in the mid-1800s, complete with wooden sidewalks. A visitors center and several restored homes display exhibits that tell the story of Lincoln’s life with his wife, children and friends in Springfield. Nearby, enter the halls of the Old State Capitol, an accurate replica of the state capitol building in Springfield, where Lincoln practiced law, served as a legislator and gave his famed House Divided speech on slavery in 1858 upon accepting the Illinois Republican Party’s nomination for the office of state senator. It was this speech that marked the beginning of the dialogue on slavery and helped to define the issues that were at the heart of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Lincoln would later lie KIM KARPELES in state at the Old State Capitol after his assassination, just six days after the Civil War ended. Across the street is the Lincoln Herndon Law Offices, the only building still standing where Lincoln practiced law in Springfield. The rooms, filled with clutter and makeshift furniture, draw a vivid picture of what a normal day was like for the two busy attorneys. SCOTT BELL 8 ILLINOIS.
