Lake of the Ozarks 2009 Vacation & Service Guide - (Page 18) Lake West Ever since the Lake of the Ozarks was created in 1931, its west side has been known as the “quiet side.” But that’s slowly changing. The Community Bridge, opened in 1998, has made it easier to access the Highway 5 corridor. As a result more visitors are discovering the scenic west side. Versailles Courthouse Laurie offers a wide array of lodging and dining choices to suit your vacation needs. You will find very unique specialty and antique shops, a multi-screen cinema, golf, nightlife and live music, both on and off the water. Highway 5 from Laurie leads to Sunrise Beach, Hurricane Deck and Greenview. Other west-side towns include Climax Springs, and Stover. One of the lakes many man made sand beaches (7MM Gravois Arm) Versailles serves as the western gateway to the Lake. Its historic Martin Hotel, once a stop on the 1846 stagecoach line, houses the fascinating 20-plus-room Morgan County Museum—truly a must-see. Versailles’ nostalgic downtown features unique shops, restaurants and the circa-1930 Royal Theatre. The Old Tyme Apple Festival, held in October, attracts more than 30,000 visitors. Nearby are golfing, dining, attractions and a cave that is the only completely handicap-accessible show cave in Missouri. In Gravois Mills, the Lake area’s oldest town, platted in 1884, you’ll find antique shops, quaint restaurants and a scenic trout hatchery that offers public fishing. On Highway 5, on the north end of Laurie, is the Shrine of St. Patrick Church, home of the National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church. This internationally recognized non-denominational shrine is dedicated to mothers everywhere regardless of race, color or creed. Off Highway 5 on State Road O is the original Old St. Patrick Church, Cemetery and Museum. Built in 1868, it has been lovingly restored and is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
