Missouri 2008 Official Vacation Planner - (Page 22) WINNING IMAGES Missouri Tourism photography contest R etirees Virginia Wright and husband, Jack, love to travel. Jack likes “to get lost,” and Virginia likes to photograph what the couple finds when they’re “lost.” In July 2007, Virginia found Tom Sokolik and son Zackary fishing the Osage River during a water release from nearby Truman Dam. “They made such a good team that I asked their permission to take some pictures,” said Virginia. Using a Nikon D80 with telephoto lens, she captured father and son reeling in a six-pound white catfish from the rushing water. That image won the grand prize in Missouri Tourism’s 2007 photography contest. From their home near the Lake of the Ozarks, the Wrights make occasional trips to the western United States and frequent photo jaunts, both planned and spontaneous, all over Missouri. Virginia, 66, usually focuses on landscapes and wildlife (she’s won several prizes), but she’s alert and prepared when other interesting subjects pre- sent themselves. “My wife doesn’t go out the door without her camera,” said Jack. “She might forget me but never the camera.” Missouri Tourism’s 2007 photography contest attracted more than 700 entries from shutterbugs around the country. Virginia Wright’s family-fishing image netted the $1,000 grand prize. Three runnerup photographers, whose winning photos appear on the facing page, received $500, $250 and $100 respectively. Other worthy images submitted for the contest appear throughout this Vacation Planner. 22 Missouri Vacation Planner 2008
