The oldest, Jules Guerin’s “In Memoriam,” dates to the 1920s and depicts a figurative victory rising from the destruction of war. Between 1950 and 1970, Kansas City artist Daniel MacMorris produced the other murals, three of which illustrate the wartime contributions of American women. Memory Hall’s main attraction is “Pantheon de la Guerre,” MacMorris’ reworking of a huge propaganda mural begun in France while World War I still raged. Independence in Harrisonville commemorates a 1916 auto route that passed through town on its way from New Orleans to Canada. Between 1934 and 1943, the federal government sponsored murals in post offices across the United States. Twelve such panels adorn the lobby of the main post office in St. Joseph, 201 S. 8th St. The Pleasant Hill postal station’s mural depicts Civil War tragedy. A romanticized farm scene graces the post office in Bethany. The Higginsville post office mural depicts industrial progress in that city, while farming and mining are the mural subjects at the Marceline post office.
