Galleries show a variety of original works and the 20-acre Henry Lay Sculpture Park invites strollers west of town. Since 2000, local organizers have populated downtown with 24 engaging murals of varying seasonal and historical dress. “Lindbergh at Ashburn,” commemorating the famous flyer’s barnstorming flights in northern Pike County, is a local favorite. Louisiana, Missouri’s official “Route 79 Mural City,” is 85 miles north of St. Louis. St. Louis Floodwall Murals Community artists have turned the massive St. Louis floodwall into a great outdoor canvas, delighting hikers and bikers along the Riverfront Trail, which parallels the mighty Mississippi. At the Lewis Street trailhead, “Reflections on a River” — a 190-foot, ceramic mural — depicts river creatures from amoebas to fish to migrating birds. It appears to be a shimmering abstract expression at a distance but reveals its subjects in exquisite detail up close. Four miles north, the 320-foot “Trail of Discovery” fills the floodwall with scenes both natural and historical. TRAILNET ST.
