St. Louis Official Visitors Guide 2009 - (Page 10) downtown streetscape is the City Garden. Located along a two-block section of Market Street between Eighth and Tenth streets, the new oasis will sparkle with water features, sculptures, pathways, plants and a café on the three-acre site. The park’s flowers, shrubs and trees will be selected in partnership with and maintained by the Missouri Botanical Garden. Another new view of downtown debuts this year across the Mississippi River in neighboring Illinois. The Gateway Foundation has opened a 43-foot-tall viewing platform directly across from the Gateway Arch, completing the vision of the Arch’s architect, Eero Saarinen, for a park that crossed the state borders. The platform is the centerpiece of the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park, named for the visionary benefactor who funded the project to create the best view in the region. BILL BOYCE Riverfront Trail A biking and walking path across the McKinley Bridge north of downtown is another link in the chain of trails that crisscross the bistate area. The Riverfront Trail, which has been renovated to the tune of more than $2 million, meanders along the river beginning just north of the Gateway Arch. New for 2009 along the trail is River View Park, where a large turtle sculpture will double as a water feature and a fanciful carved dragon will provide an overlook on the Mississippi. kTRAVEL TIP Be sure to visit the Missouri Botanical Garden during its 150th anniversary this year for special exhibits and a walk through the Climatron tropical rain forest or the largest Japanese Garden in North America. 10 The Official St. Louis Visitors Guide w w w. e x p l o r e s t l o u i s . c o m http://www.slso.org http://www.slso.org http://www.slso.org http://www.explorestlouis.com
