Road warriors have been answering the call of the “Mother Road” for more than eight decades, introducing subsequent generations to the iconic American road trip. The St. Louis stretch of historic 66 is paved with roadside attractions and the lure and legends of the open road. Begin your adventure where the rubber met the Mother Road in St. Louis at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. The bridge, located north of downtown, was Route 66’s original crossing over the Mississippi River. Cars no longer run across the bridge, but you can. Now the longest pedestrian span in the world, it is operated by Trailnet. Open daily for hiking and biking, it provides stunning views of the river. Follow the Riverfront Trail hiking and biking path from the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge to the Gateway Arch. The great Arch is a monument to President Thomas Jefferson and the explorers, pioneers and Native Americans who helped open the American West.
