This United Nations World Heritage archaeological site near Collinsville, Illinois, contains the remains of the largest ancient Indian city north of Mexico. Native people known as the Mississippians began Cahokia around A.D. 700. At its height, Cahokia had approximately 20,000 residents within its six-square-mile boundaries. At the Center for American Archeology, located in Kampsville, Illinois, archaeologists found evidence of the earliest house structures in North America and prehistoric villages dating from 3300 B.C.
