MAPS & TRANSPORTATION TOVG fw08 DOWNTOWN TUCSON EL PRESIDIO HISTORIC DISTRICT WALKING TOUR ROBERT GARCIA l Presidio Historic District is a wonderful place to walk through Tucson’s lively past. As Tucson’s first neighborhood, this area contains a charming variety of architectural and landscape styles that reflect Tucson’s successive cultures and led to its listing as a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) district. Among its buildings are private residences and historic landmarks, offices and government buildings, shops, restaurants, and the Tucson Museum of Art complex. See map on pages 22–23. TUCSON VISITOR CENTER Before beginning this self-guided tour, visit the Tucson Visitor Center to collect maps, brochures, guidebooks, souvenirs, and information on the free downtown shuttle service, the Tucson Inner City Express Transit (TICET). Hours: Mon.–Fri. 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Closed New Year’s Day, Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The visitor center is located on the north side of La Placita Village, a colorful, multistory office complex at Broadway Boulevard and Church Avenue, with street and garage parking east of the complex. La Placita is situated on the site of a former Barrio Histórico neighborhood and features a shady courtyard, with picnic seating and bistro cafes surrounding the site of the 19th-century Plaza de Mesilla—a stagecoach stop along the famed El Camino Real. The gazebo is a replica of the plaza’s original 1880s bandstand. EL PRESIDIO HISTORIC DISTRICT This district includes the area that once was the Spanish walled fort, called the Royal Presidio San Agustín del Tucson, as well as a section of affluent homes occupied by civic and social leaders of the early 1900s, referred to as “Snob Hollow.” Most buildings date from 1860 to 1920, and many still are private residences and businesses. B HISTORIC FOOTBRIDGES Over Congress Street between Church and Granada Avenues and over Pennington Street. The GARCES FOOTBRIDGE is a memorial to Father Francisco Garces, Franciscan missionary to the Pima Indian village at “A“ Mountain (Sentinel Peak). The ALLANDE FOOTBRIDGE honors the first resident commander of the presidio. C EL PRESIDIO PARK Alameda Street west of Church Avenue.
