It has historic plaques, sculptures, fountains, benches, and food vendors. D TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORIC BLOCK 140 N. Main Ave. Tues.–Sat. 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Sun. 12–4 p.m. Closed Mondays and major national holidays. Admission: $8/general, $6/senior, $3/student. The main museum building has special exhibitions and a gift shop; a cafe is open Mon.–Fri. 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Enter off Main Avenue to tour the five restored homes on the Historic Block, located at what would have been the northwest corner of the presidio. The FISH HOUSE (1868) displays Western American art, while the STEVENS HOUSE (1865) has exhibits of Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, and Latin American folk art. These attached buildings are typical of the Sonoran row house style, with tall rooms, thick adobe walls, and saguaro-rib ceilings. Cross THE PLAZA OF THE PIONEERS to LA CASA CORDOVA (before 1848) (NRHP), a typical Mexican-style adobe home of mid1800s Tucson. Inside is EL NACIMIENTO, a traditional Mexican Christmas display, open Nov.–Mar. At the northeast corner is the ROMERO HOUSE (1868), which is not open to the public but is believed to incorporate a section of the original presidio wall. On Main Avenue, north of the Stevens House, is the CORBETT HOUSE (1907). This Mission Revival-style building contrasts with the neighboring adobe row houses. Its interior, with authentic period furnishings, is open to the public. GILL C. KENNY Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block F SAM HUGHES HOUSE (1864) 221–223 N. Main Ave. Now a series of garden apartments, this building was originally a small adobe house built and later expanded by early mover and shaker Sam Hughes. G CHEYNEY HOUSE (1905) 252 N. Main Ave. This Mission Revival house is a typical turn-of-the-20th-century affluent family residence. 1! OWL’S CLUB MANSION (1902–1903) 378 N. Main Ave. The second Owl’s Club, designed as a larger facility for the exclusive 1886 fraternal organization. BILL BAKER H STEINFELD MANSION (1898) 300 N. Main Ave. Designed by Henry Trost as a residence for the 13 young professional men comprising the exclusive Owl’s Club, this building also was used as a convent by the Benedictine Sisters. I Kruttschnitt House, EL PRESIDIO INN BED & BREAKFAST (before 1886) 297 N. Main Ave. Originally a Sonoran row house with 20-inch-thick walls and a flat roof, this building was converted to Victorian style in 1899. Owl’s Club Mansion 1@ VERDUGO HOUSE (1877) 317–325 N. Main Ave. This transformed Sonoran row house has 24-inch-thick adobe walls, contemporary colorful doors, and the canales (drainpipes) that once drained water off the original flat roof. Manning House E MANNING HOUSE (1905–1907) 450 W. Paseo Redondo. This grand mansion, designed by prominent Tucson architect Henry Trost, is part of the elite Snob Hollow residential area centering on Main Avenue. In the front lawn is a statue of Hugh O’Connor (also known as Hugo O’Conor), founder of the presidio. Closed to the public. (NRHP) WWW.VISITTUCSON.ORG J KINGAN PLACE (1902) 325 W. Franklin St. The first permanent home of the Tucson Fine Arts Association, which became the Tucson Museum of Art. 1) HEREFORD HOUSE (1902) 340 N. Main Ave. Designed by Henry Trost for a former chancellor of the University of Arizona, this two-story house shows Frank Lloyd Wright influences. 1# MCLEARY HOUSE (1872) 241–245 W. Franklin St. This house began as a Sonoranstyle flat-roofed adobe and later evolved with the Victorian porch and details that can be seen today—a good example of Tucson’s Mexican-Anglo heritage blend. 1$ CORNER MARKET (1880) 211 W. Franklin St. Once a Chinese grocery, this much-photographed building features the 45-degree corner cut common in commercial properties in Sonoran neighborhoods.
