Court Ave. Originally built as a residence by Jules Flin, the French stonemason who worked on the first San Agustín Cathedral, the house features a stone-lined basement and front porch made of volcanic rock from “A“ Mountain. The restaurant, which opened in 1922 in the building now housing the Tucson Visitor Center, moved in 1969 to this location, where it is still family-operated. 1& OLD TOWN ARTISANS (1850s–1860s) Telles Street Block. This city block of Sonoran row houses, with thick adobe walls and saguaro-rib ceilings, houses Southwestern specialty shops and a restaurant, surrounding a shady courtyard. 1* PRESIDIO SAN AGUSTÍN DEL TUCSON 197 N. Church Ave. An interpretive center operates in a reconstructed portion of the 11-acre fort that defines Tucson’s nickname, “The Old Pueblo.” The original presidio consisted of 10-foot adobe walls and two 20foot corner towers; the northeast portion is replicated here at its original site. 1( PIMA COUNTY COURTHOUSE (1929) 115 N. Church Ave. Prominent Tucson architect Roy Place designed this landmark with Spanish Colonial and Moorish styles and a mosaic tile dome. In the courtyard pavement, running north to south, a two-inch strip of dark brown granite represents the location of the east wall of the presidio. (NRHP) 2) AUGUST 20TH PARK Broadway Boulevard and Church Avenue. Plaque commemorates Tucson’s founding on August 20, 1775, as a Spanish presidio on the site of an ancient Indian village. Preserved here are the foundations of the first San Agustín Cathedral, built in 1880 with assistance from stonemason Jules Flin (see El Charro Café). Note statue of Pancho Villa. Tour includes historic neighborhoods, Fourth Avenue District, “A” Mountain, and Mission San Xavier del Bac. HISTORIC WALKING TOURS BY KRUSE ARIZONA, 881-1638. These tours give you an idea of what it was like to live in Tucson about 1850–1910. They emphasize the history and architecture of Barrio Histórico, El Presidio Neighborhood, Armory Park, the original presidio, and the downtown commercial area. Ride a Segway PT (personal transportation device) for an unusual way to sightsee d o w n t o w n . S E G WAY O F T U C S O N , 749-5325, offers fun and safe professionally guided tours daily. OTHER DOWNTOWN TOURS For a more expansive walking tour of downtown, follow the turquoise line of the PRESIDIO TRAIL. An effort of the Tucson Presidio Trust for Historic Preservation, the newly marked path leads to historic sites and fun points of interest throughout various downtown neighborhoods.
