POPULATION Tucson is Arizona’s secondlargest city and the seat of Pima County. The metropolitan population of more than 900,000 is steadily increasing, making Tucson one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. MEXICO TRAVEL The international border between the United States and Mexico is an hour drive from Tucson via Interstate 19. The twin-cities area of Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, is a fun, safe place for travelers wishing to explore the culture, places, sights, and sounds of Mexico. American visitors may travel to Nogales, within the 15mile border zone, without a visa or vehicle permit; but they must carry photo identification and proof of citizenship. For land border crossings, citizens traveling between the United States and Mexico currently need to present either a passport; passport card; or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. As early as June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport or passport card. Travelers are encouraged to verify requirements before traveling to Mexico. The Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau also operates a visitor center in Hermosillo, Mexico. Within Mexico, call 01 (662) 213-7282 to make Tucson hotel reservations and more. While summer does heat up, Tucson’s combination of low humidity and moderate altitude makes higher temperatures feel more comfortable. Two rainy seasons replenish the desert—one in the summer and one in winter. The summer rainy season is often referred to as monsoon season.
