OPENING THOUGHTS

Rewriting the Future

How funding reduces cancer's toll on families
The BC Cancer community is
comprised of many faces: clinicians,
scientists, nurses, staff, volunteers,
donors and families facing cancer. We
all share a steadfast commitment to
caring for one another, which takes
on many forms.
Through every conversation, every
study and every enhancement to care we fund, families
touched by cancer are at the forefront of our minds. We are
tirelessly striving to achieve a world free from cancer.
These factors drive our collective work with BC Cancer.
I'm pleased to share with you that we've strengthened the
partnership between BC Cancer Agency and BC Cancer
Foundation by aligning our identities under a BC Cancer
umbrella. Our new, shared visual identity represents our
collective quest to break down cancer because together BC
CAN change the story for people facing cancer.
The Stewart family is a perfect example. This August,
I had the opportunity to meet Susan Stewart at the 10th
annual Glotman-Simpson Cypress Challenge. Susan is
a mother of three who was diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer, which is considered one of the deadliest cancers.
Thanks to a progressive new clinical trial taking place at
BC Cancer, generously funded by our donors, she has seen
a significant reduction in her tumour size.
Seeing nearly 700 riders rally around Susan and her
family was an inspiring moment. Just a few years ago,

the outcome for people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer
was grim. And now, thanks to your support, we are giving
families such as Susan's a future they wouldn't have had.
You can read more about her inspiring story on page 6.
By coming together at events such as the Cypress
Challenge and the British Columbia Ride to Conquer Cancer,
we are sending a clear message that we are here for
families facing cancer at every step.
This issue of Partners In DISCOVERY is filled with many
exciting advancements in cancer research that are made
possible thanks to your generosity. Our cover story on
page 8 sheds light on the importance of further progress
in preventing ovarian cancer. On page 12, you can read
about two revolutionary clinical trials that are expected
to alter the course of prostate cancer treatment here in
British Columbia.
At the root of each one of these discoveries lies our
collective commitment to bring hope, comfort and care,
and to change the outcome for our loved ones. As you
read this issue, I invite you to take note of how BC CAN
make a difference.
