DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION

D

isruption surrounds us. In February, a line of thunderstorms
rushed through the D.C. area and was said to be one of the
fiercest since the June 2012 derecho. One section of the
path where I run was devastated and it occurred to me that it was
an example of creative destruction. Because now in May, this area
has fresh green shoots sprouting around the fallen trees showing
a dramatic rebirth.
Disruptive innovation in technology will be displayed at CES Asia™
taking place in Shanghai on May 11. This premier platform highlighting global innovation in the Asian marketplace includes tech powerhouses, innovative startups, manufacturers, developers and suppliers
that aim to display the latest products and create strong business relationships. To showcase innovation in the Asian market, i3 talks with
Huawei's President of the Handset Division Kevin Ho about Huawei's
brand, flagship devices and plans for the future.
Further underscoring the impact of tech disruption, see how
augmented reality (AR) differs from virtual reality (VR). AR
content is overlaid on the physical environment users see, blending digital sound, video, graphics and
GPS data with real life. With VR,
users immerse themselves in manufactured surroundings. See how AR
is being put to work in aerospace,
consumer technology, construction,

personal health monitoring systems
to industrial machine-to-machine integration. Recently, China
Mobile and Nokia demonstrated a platform that connects robots
via 5G wireless technology, underscoring the importance of global
IoT collaboration. And while connecting cars to the Internet and
cloud-based services has clear benefits, connectivity also brings
cybersecurity concerns. Read on to see the work being done in this
area. And we take a deeper dive into one of the biggest things in
entertainment today, eSports aka electronic sports.
We celebrate CTA Tech Week with coverage of CES on the Hill
and the Digital Patriots Dinner, where Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
received CTA's Innovation Policy Ninja Award and Sen. Cory
Booker (D-NJ) and Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) were honored
as Digital Patriots. And we also examine why Washington, D.C.
earned the title of Innovation Champion in CTA's Innovation
Scorecard and talk to several district-based startups that have
interesting business models like Capitol Bells and Driversiti.
