The goal was to provide a broader
perspective on how cognitive-powered
systems can help transform the way information is delivered and create an optimal
balance among accessibility, privacy and
security. The joint study was published on
August 24, 2016.

What is cognitive computing?
Cognitive computing is sometimes
equated with machine learning, or artificial intelligence (AI), but it extends much
further in capability. Cognitive computing
is designed to enhance and accelerate
human decision-making and knowledge
by integrating and gaining insights from
new and diverse data sources, learning
from interactions, recognizing patterns
and leveraging natural language processing. A cognitive computing platform
such as IBM Watson enables us to deliver
human expertise and knowledge at scale,
which is a critical to building and providing solutions for a rapidly growing and
global aging population.

How does IBM use their
accessibility team?
Accessibility is a critical focus for

organizations around the world. Initiatives
are being driven by the more than one
billion people with disabilities, including
the growing aging population, the proliferation of mobile devices, and new industry
standards and evolving government
regulations.
For more than a century IBM has been
committed to accessibility, believing that
it is not just the right thing to do but good
for business. Accessibility is essential to
reduce the barriers to technology and
provide a connection to the information
everyone needs in their daily lives. It creates
a smarter, more inclusive market and
workplace by ensuring that organizations
can better engage and support the broadest
range of clients, consumers and employees.
The IBM Accessibility Research group
works across the entire IBM organization,
including the Watson teams, to push the
boundaries of what defines accessibility,
explore new areas of opportunity and drive
the development of new, innovative technologies and platforms that not only create
an inclusive workplace environment, but
are designed to personalize the user experience on any device.

include nearly 10 billion people in 2050,
more than one out of five will be age 60 or
older, compared to just 12 percent today.
An aging population creates a uniquely
challenging market with diverse and
evolving needs. It's a complex demographic
without easily drawn boundaries or segments. Aging services in the U.S. and in
other countries now are highly fragmented,
and while older adults are increasingly
technologically sophisticated, access to new,
integrated technologies and solutions is
uneven. There's a real opportunity to create
new innovative solutions and partnerships that will help people better manage
everyday activities, extend their independence and enrich their quality of life.

Why did IBM partner with the CTA
Foundation on this project?
Meeting the needs of millions of older
adults will require a unique combination of
new technologies, partnerships, ideas and
business models. The CTA Foundation's
commitment to disability issues, their
partnerships with leading aging advocacy
groups and their relationships with technology industry leaders made them an ideal
partner for this project.
