huge impact on how people take it, Kelleher says, so
finding as much calm as you can before you begin the
conversation will help. "If you present it as a crisis, people will feed off your fear," she says. Even if the news

DIAGNOSIS

Getting an upsetting diagnosis from the
doctor is hard enough. But you can't bear
the news alone. Eventually, you'll have to
share with loved ones that you're going to be facing a
tough time.
Going into the conversation with a supportive
mentality can make a world of difference, says Mary
Kelleher, a licensed marriage and family therapist and
a clinical member of the American Association for
Marriage and Family Therapy. She specializes in dealing
with chronic illnesses.
"You have to make it clear that what you're
going through, you're going to face it as a team,"
Kelleher says.
