AHMED KANDEEL, MD
When Ahmed Kandeel, MD, became a doctor, it
fulfilled a longtime plan. "My father was a physician,"
says Dr. Kandeel, who is a general surgeon. "I have
always known that I was going to become one."
In his practice at University of Maryland
Community Medical Group - Surgical Care,
Dr. Kandeel treats the whole body, from head and
neck surgery to comprehensive gastrointestinal
surgery, which can include esophagus, stomach, liver,
pancreas and colorectal. He's even done trauma
and transplant surgeries. A common theme running
through his surgical practice is his focus on minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.
For Dr. Kandeel, trying to find less-invasive
methods and techniques to solve complex surgery
problems is immensely gratifying. Early in his
training, he says, most people were in the hospital
for a week afterward with a large surgical incision.
These days, because he does many surgeries less
invasively, most of his patients leave the same day.
Dr. Kandeel is married, has a 16-month-old child
and lives in La Plata with his family.
