Four facts about the flu vaccine BY EMILY PRIMM
Each year in the U.S., millions of people
get influenza-the flu-and hundreds of
thousands are hospitalized. Although
many factors influence who gets the flu and how
severely, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention says that getting an annual vaccine is
the No. 1 way to prevent it. Still, there are myths
circulating about the flu vaccine. Here is what you
need to know.
MYTH #1: The flu shot gives you the flu.
FACT: The flu shot will not give you the flu. The
vaccine uses an inactivated form of the virus or no
virus at all.
MYTH #2: The vaccine doesn't really work,
anyway.
FACT: Although your results may vary, there are
plenty of reasons to get a vaccine. The vaccine helps
in these ways:
* If you do get sick, the illness is not as strong.
* People in the most vulnerable age groups
(younger than 5 and older than 65) have a lowered
risk of complications requiring hospitalization and
avoid more serious outcomes.
MYTH #3: I don't have to get the flu shot
every year.
FACT: The flu is a virus, and viruses
mutate. This means that each flu season, a
new, mutated strain (version) of the virus
rears its ugly head. Getting the vaccine every
year helps protect you from new strains.
MYTH #4: All I need is the vaccine to
protect me from getting the flu.
FACT: Don't just rely on the vaccine.
* Avoid close contact with people who have
the flu.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
* Disinfect surfaces and objects that may
be contaminated with germs like the flu.
* Wash your hands often.
* Get plenty of rest.
* Follow a healthy diet and exercise plan. ■
