WHY CALL THE MIDWIFE
You might associate midwives with home births. But there
is a growing trend among hospitals to have them on staff.
UVA Health System has four certified nurse midwives. These
healthcare professionals specialize in helping women have a
natural childbirth. And that's not all they do. As advanced practice nurses, UVA midwives also can provide regular gynecological care and primary care.

What can a woman expect
with a midwife helping her
through childbirth?
We love being a partner with the woman
and her family so that she understands
her choices and can decide what works
best for her. The word "midwife" means
"with woman." We focus on providing
support throughout active labor in a variety of ways, including position changes,
massage and hydrotherapy (using the
shower or tub) to help labor progress
naturally. If a woman chooses pain medication or an epidural, we have those at
our disposal as well. Our goal is to help
women decide what kind of birth experience they want and help them to achieve
it, while eliminating unnecessary interventions and focusing on keeping mom
and baby safe and healthy.

Why should a woman have
her baby and gynecological
care at UVA?
We offer women the best of so many
worlds. We have midwives who specialize in normal pregnancies and natural
births. We have wonderful physicians
in general obstetrics and maternal fetal
medicine who can take care of any complication during pregnancy. And if there
are issues with the baby, we have a great
NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). n

What services do hospitalbased midwives provide?
We focus on pregnancy and
childbirth but offer women other types
of healthcare. We can provide annual
gynecological exams, preconception or
contraceptive counseling, and evaluation and treatment for infections or
menstrual problems.
If a woman is pregnant or planning to
get pregnant, she can come directly to
our clinic in the Battle Building. If she's
not pregnant, she can see one of the
midwives at our Primary Care Center.
