Best of Both Worlds

A few years ago, we introduced 3-D mammograms at UVA Health
System. Now women can take advantage of the benefits of a 3-D
mammogram but with no more radiation exposure than from a
regular 2-D mammogram.
Most women can benefit from 3-D mammography (also known
as tomosynthesis). It reduces the likelihood that a woman will be
called back for additional
X-rays or ultrasound due
to normal overlapping
tissue that can look like
possible cancer. "As an
advance in breast cancer
screening, 3-D mammography improves our ability to
rule out or find cancer in most
women," says Jennifer Harvey, MD,
a UVA radiologist who specializes in breast
cancer. But, she adds, about 10 percent of women-
those who have extremely dense breast tissue-may benefit more
from supplemental screening, such as ultrasound, in addition to 2-D
mammography, than from 3-D.

We all have negative thoughts: How many of us have assumed
we wouldn't get the pay raise we were hoping for? But for
some, especially those dealing with anxiety and depression,
negative thoughts can be debilitating. A free online program
being developed at University of Virginia hopes to change this
pervasive mindset.
The aim of the MindTrails project is to train people to
imagine different outcomes to many scenarios. Participants
can anonymously access the program through a smartphone,
tablet or computer. It is four sessions long, and each session is
about 15 to 20 minutes. "We really want people to incorporate
it into their lives and say, 'Oh, this is a time where I really need
to work on that negative habit that I have in my thinking style.
Let me grab 15 minutes and see if I can turn that around a little
bit,'" says Bethany Teachman, PhD, a UVA licensed clinical psychologist and professor of psychology.
"Everywhere I go," she adds, "I hear stories from people
about their struggles with anxiety and mood disorders ...
It breaks my heart because the large majority [of people]
are not getting treatment. We can't simply wait for people
to come into therapy to see us. That's a great, additional
approach, but we need a wider array of tools in our toolbox to
help people."

access to different versions so researchers can see which
