Bariatric Times - June 2008 - (Page 3) Bariatric Times • June 2008 Editorial Message 3 Acute bleeding, the multidisciplinary team, endoluminal treatment options, surgical site infection, the sleep–obesity link and congratulations to the ASMBS for 25 years of service! Dear Readers, I recently came across an article in the Lancet entitled, “Obesity as a cause of global warming?” Initially, I wasn’t sure if this was a joke title; however, upon reading it, I realized it was not a joke at all. After reading it, I couldn’t believe that this article was actually published in the Lancet. It originates at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The Raul J. Rosenthal, MD, FACS, Clinical Editor, authors of this paper, Dr. Phil Edwards and Dr. Ian Roberts, Bariatric Times, Program Director of come to the sad conclusion that obese people are Minimally Invasive Surgery, Director of disproportionately responsible for high food prices and the Minimally Invasive Fellowship greenhouse gas emissions because they consume 18-percent Program, and Director of the Bariatric and more food energy due to their greater body mass—and require Metabolic Institute, Cleveland Clinic increased quantities of fuel to transport themselves and the Florida—Weston, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. food they eat. They recommend that if governments would promote hiking and biking, we could keep our BMIs in normal range and, as a consequence, it would reduce the global demand for food and diminish the greenhouse effect. So much for the seriousness of what is being published in peer reviewed journals. Now onto some other interesting article findings. Finally (and good news for Drs. Roberts and Edwards)—CHILDHOOD OBESITY HITS PLATEAU! This article was published in JAMA and is based on survey data gathered from 1999 to 2006 by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is not clear what are the reasons for this astounding result or if the plateau is the result of public anti-obesity efforts to limit junk food and increase physical activity in schools. Doctors noted that even if the trend held up, 32 percent of US schoolchildren remained overweight or obese, representing an entire generation that will be saddled with weight-related health problems as it ages. The data comes from thousands of children who have taken part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys—compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC since the 1960s. In this issue of BT, we present you with excellent contributions, but I would like to highlight Dr. Buffington’s article on INCREASED RISK FOR WEIGHT GAIN WITH SLEEP CURTAILMENT. I personally enjoyed reading it tremendously and now worry about myself. I am sure that you are all getting ready for the upcoming 25th Annual Meeting of the ASMBS in Washington, DC; therefore, I will not take any more of your time. Safe travels and see you in DC!
