Synopsis: The authors discuss the effects of bariatric surgery on pregnancy, including increased postoperative fertility, nutritional monitoring and supplementation, safety of pregnancy after bariatric surgery, and effect of pregnancy on postoperative weight loss. They also provide recommendations for patient management before and during pregnancy. Synopsis: To help develop a physiologically sound approach to counseling and management of obese women of childbearing age who are either contemplating or have already undergone bariatric surgery, authors review the primary nutritional and surgical effects of commonly performed bariatric procedures as well as offer guidelines on preconception, pregnancy, and lactation. Synopsis: In this review, the author focuses on the effects of hormonal imbalances— including changes in fertility, contraceptive response, and pregnancy outcomes—on the sexual and reproductive function of obese women and obese women who undergo bariatric surgery. Synopsis: The authors reviewed the literature and discuss the risks and benefits of pregnancies in women who have undergone bariatric surgery in comparison to both community and obese cohorts. PMID: 18299862 Improvement in infertility and pregnancy outcomes after weight loss surgery. Patel JA, Colella JJ, Esaka E, et al. Med Clin North Am 2007;91(3):515–28, xiii. Review. Synopsis: In this paper, authors discuss post-bariatric surgery pregnancy outcomes and provide recommendations for counseling and care, including a delay of two years after surgery before attempting to become pregnant to avoid most of the potential nutritional complications. PMID: 17509393 Skrekas G, Lapatsanis D, Stafyla V, Papalambros A. Obes Surg Epub ahead of print 2008 Apr 8. Synopsis: Authors studied postoperative complications and weight loss in 93 obese individuals (65 females) who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for the treatment of morbid obesity. Based on the results, they conclude that this procedure is more suitable for intermediate morbidly obese patients with BMI between 40 and 50 kg/m2. Synopsis: The authors consider a two-stage approach to surgical treatment of obesity in the highrisk, high-BMI (>60) patient by evaluating outcomes in 126 patients (53% female) who first underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
