Synopsis: The authors reviewed the literature and discuss the risks and benefits of pregnancies in women who have undergone bariatric surgery in comparison to both community and obese cohorts. Synopsis: In this paper, authors discuss post-bariatric surgery pregnancy outcomes and provide recommendations for counseling and care, including a delay of two years after surgery before attempting to become pregnant to avoid most of the potential nutritional complications. PMID: 17509393 Skrekas G, Lapatsanis D, Stafyla V, Papalambros A. Obes Surg Epub ahead of print 2008 Apr 8. Synopsis: Authors studied postoperative complications and weight loss in 93 obese individuals (65 females) who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for the treatment of morbid obesity. Based on the results, they conclude that this procedure is more suitable for intermediate morbidly obese patients with BMI between 40 and 50 kg/m2. Synopsis: The authors consider a two-stage approach to surgical treatment of obesity in the highrisk, high-BMI (>60) patient by evaluating outcomes in 126 patients (53% female) who first underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
