Bariatric Times - August 2008 - (Page 20) 20 Journal Watch CALENDAR OF EVENTS Synopsis: In this review, authors discuss the current understanding of the endocrine and metabolic effects of fat and their potential relation to cardiovascular disease. Bahrami H, Bluemke DA, Kronmal R, et al. J Am Coll Cardiol. 2008 May 6;51(18):1775–1783. Synopsis: To determine how metabolic syndrome, inflammatory markers, and insulin resistance are associated with incident congestive heart failure, and examine whether these risk factors may provide the link between obesity and congestive heart failure, researchers examined data from a community-based multicenter cohort study of 6,814 participants (age 45–84 years, 3,601 women) of four ethnicities (Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics, and Chinese Americans) who were recruited between 2000 and 2002 from six US communities. Based on the results, they conclude that inflammatory markers and albuminuria are independent predictors of congestive heart failure, and suggest that the association of obesity and congestive heart failure may be related to patho- Bariatric Times • August 2008 PATIENT SAFETY IN OBESITY SURGERY: IMPLEMENTING ACCREDITATION STANDARDS AND BEST PRACTICES September 11-13, 2008 Boston, Massachusetts www.psos-course.org physiologic pathways associated with inflammation. Synopsis: In this review, authors discuss the “obesity paradox” and potential mechanisms that might explain why overweight and obese heart failure patients seem to have better survival than their healthy weight counterparts. PMID: 18414183 Cardiac remodeling in obesity. Abel ED, Litwin SE, Sweeney G. Physiol Rev 2008 Apr;88(2):389–419. Synopsis: Authors review evidence from human and animal model studies and summarize the ways in which obesity can influence structure and function of the heart, examine current hypotheses regarding mechanisms linking obesity and various aspects of cardiac remodeling, and consider the role of leptin and the emerging promise of adiponectin as a cardioprotective agent.
