Bariatric Times - September 2008 - (Page 33) Bariatric Times • September 2008 Journal Watch 33 multicenter observational study for quality assurance in obesity surgery 2005 and 2006. Stroh C, Hohmann U, Will U, et al. Int J Colorectal Dis. 2008 Jun 6. [Epub ahead of print] Synopsis: Authors conducted a prospective multicenter trial of 493 patients who underwent adjustable silicone gastric banding in two centers of bariatric surgery in Germany from 1995 to 2007, and discuss results such as type of surgery, outcomes, and band migration. PMID: 18535832 Outcome after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding—eight years experience. Weiner R, Blanco-Engert R, Weiner S, et al. Obes Surg. 2003 Jun;13(3):427–434. Synopsis: Authors evaluated longterm weight loss after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding in 984 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. Results are discussed and authors conclude that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is safe, with a lower complication rate than other bariatric operations. PMID: 12841906 High failure rate after laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding for treatment of morbid obesity. DeMaria EJ, Sugerman HJ, Meador JG, et al. Ann Surg. 2001 Jun;233(6):809–18. Synopsis: Authors report the results of 37 patients undergoing laparoscopic placement of the laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding device for treatment of obesity. They found that this procedure is effective for the surgical treatment of morbid obesity, and report on complications (including esophageal dilatation, band leakage, infection, erosion, and slippage), as well as discuss that inadequate weight loss is common, particularly in African American patients. PMID: 11371739 Laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding: prospective evaluation of intragastric migration of the lap band. Silecchia G, Restuccia A, Elmore U, et al. Surg Laparosc Endosc Percutan Tech. 2001 Aug;11(4):229–34. Synopsis: In this study, researchers prospectively assessed the incidence of lap band intragastric migration and the effectiveness of band removal by evaluating results in 148 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding from 1996 and 2000. They found that routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy can discover asymptomatic band migrations early, band erosion did not require emergency treatment, and bands can be removed safely by a minimally invasive approach. PMID: 11525366 Band erosion after laparoscopic gastric banding: Occurrence and results after conversion to Rouxen-Y gastric bypass. Suter M, Giusti V, Héraief E, Calmes JM. Obes Surg. 2004 Mar;14(3):381–386. Synopsis: To examine experience with band erosion and immediate or delayed conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, authors compared data from 347 patients with and without band erosion, and found that median follow-up was greater than four years, band erosion was more common than usually reported, band removal with immediate or delayed conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is feasible with an acceptable morbidity, and band removal prevents weight regain in most cases. PMID: 15072660 ANEMIA AND NUTRITIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF BARIATRIC SURGERY Obesity, bariatric surgery, and iron deficiency: true, true, true, and related. Love AL, Billett HH. Am J Hematol. 2008 May;83(5):403–9. Review. Synopsis: In this review, authors discuss iron deficiency and its association with obesity and bariatric surgery, including why iron deficiency develops after gastric bypass, who is predisposed to developing iron deficiency, preoperative assessment of patients, postoperative nutritional care, and treatment for iron http://www.bariatrictimes.com
