Bariatric Times - January 2009 - (Page 3) Bariatric Times • January 2009 Editorial Message 3 An FDA warning, bariatric surgery for teens with obesity and diabetes, and Edward Mason on the mechanism of T2D surgery Happy New Year, Bariatric Times readers! Dear Readers, I hope you enjoyed the holiday season and that you had a great finish to 2008 and an even better start in 2009! We at Bariatric Times are looking forward to sharing with you another year filled with great contributions to bariatric medicine. 2008 finished with a red flag from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerting consumers nationwide about MORE THAN 25 PRODUCTS MARKETED FOR WEIGHT LOSS THAT CONTAINED NON-APPROVED PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS. An FDA analysis found sibutramine, rimonabant, phenytoin, and phenolphthalein in some of these products. Some of the amounts of active pharmaceutical ingredients far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels, putting consumers’ health at risk. Therefore, I would strongly advise you to read this article in full and keep an eye on your patients who may have been or are still taking these drugs. I continually tell my patients every Tuesday morning during orientation that there are no “good drugs” that will help them lose and keep their weight down, and that there are only “bad drugs” available for them on the market. The main question to answer in consultation is which of those is worse? A nice article was published in the Health News section of the Los Angeles Times that features Thomas Inge, MD, associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, explaining to the public the POSITIVE EFFECTS OF BARIATRIC SURGERY IN TEENAGERS WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM OBESITY AND DIABETES. Inge’s group looked at 78 teens with type 2 diabetes. Eleven of those patients underwent gastric bypass surgery, while the other 67 patients received the usual care for their diabetes. Dr. Inge’s study found that, in most surgical cases, teens can lose one-third of their weight and come off diabetes medications with remission of their diabetes one year after bypass surgery when compared to those who were treated medically. If you want to get more details, this report is published in the January 2009 issue of Pediatrics. Great job, Tom! This issue of Bariatric Times opens our 2009 with outstanding articles, but I would like to highlight the ARTICLE WRITTEN BY EDWARD MASON ON METABOLIC SURGERY. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reviewing this manuscript. While reading parts of this paper to my son comparing humans, reptiles, and dinosaurs, I couldn’t stop raving about Ed Mason as a master surgeon, researcher, and scientist. He is the perfect definition of a scientist, a person who studies natural phenomena in a systematic manner. He uses the scientific method to answer questions, especially by using systematic observation and experience. Thank you, Ed, for this enlightening article. Finally, on behalf of the whole editorial office of Bariatric Times, we wish you all a healthy and productive 2009. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Enjoy, Raul J. Rosenthal, MD, FACS, Clinical Editor, Bariatric Times, Program Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Director of the Minimally Invasive Fellowship Program, and Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, Cleveland Clinic Florida—Weston, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
