Bariatric Times - January 2009 - (Page 32) 32 Journal Watch CALENDAR OF EVENTS Maintenance of weight loss after body contouring surgery for massive weight loss. Shermak MA, Bluebond-Langner R, Chang D. Plast Reconstr Surg 2008 Jun;121(6):2114–9. Synopsis: To determine whether massive weight loss is maintained or improved after body contouring, researchers analyzed data on 70 patients who underwent body contouring surgery after massive weight loss (57 open gastric bypass, 7 laparoscopic gastric bypass, 6 diet). They found, among other things, that while weight loss did not differ between the laparoscopic and open gastric bypass groups, surgery led to a 27-lb greater weight loss than diet. Authors conclude that patients who lose weight via gastric bypass maintain massive weight loss better than those who lose weight via diet, and that weight loss tapers over time for these surgery patients, with ultimate weight gain as seen in the general population as it ages. [Epub ahead of print] Synopsis: Researchers prospectively analyzed data on 626 patients (452 female) who who underwent Roux-enY gastric bypass from 1999 to 2006 to identify the most common preoperative endoscopic findings.
