Synopsis: Researchers studied 134 children (7–12 years) to evaluate the relationship of reactive inhibition and right-lateralized emotion processing to each other, to executive control of response suppression, and with regard to ADHD. Based on the results, they conclude that ADHD involves only particular functions that may be right lateralized, and posit that risk for comorbid disorders in ADHD such as conduct disorder or mood disorders may increase as a function of independent factors such as temperament. Synopsis: Author studied possible differences in causal attributions between 40 students (12–18 years), diagnosed with ADHD and a group of non-ADHD controls, and found that external attributions regarding luck were significantly higher for the ADHD group. Synopsis: Researchers compared the interaction of 97 fathers and mothers with their 10 to 12 months old infants during five structured contiguous play segments, using conventional comparison and individual growth modeling. Among the findings are that while parents were equally responsive and infants were equally happy during interaction with both parents, sensitivity and mood were more strongly related for mothers than for fathers. Synopsis: To evaluate the emotional availability of parents and the emotional competence of infants, authors observed 62 oneyear-old children and their parents in free play and teaching sessions. Among the results are that mothers were more emotionally available than fathers, infants exhibited more effortful attention with mothers, and change in parental emotional availability co-varied with change in infant emotional competence. Synopsis: Researchers studied coparenting behavior and the quality of mothers’ parenting behavior in relation to parents’ perceptions of their child’s attachment in 60 twoparent families with 11- to 15month-old children (30 boys, 30 girls). They found, among other things, that it was less likely that both parents would have similar perceptions of the quality of parent-child attachment relationships in families with more restrictive mothers or more competitive parents. PMID: 16756403 Establishing family foundations: intervention effects on coparenting, parent/infant well being, and parent-child relations. Feinberg ME, Kan ML. J Fam Psychol. 2008 Apr;22(2):253–263. Synopsis: Authors randomized 169 heterosexual, adult couples expecting their first child into two groups, a control group and an intervention group, which participated in a series of classes before and after birth, to test the ability of a theoretically driven, psychosocial prevention program to enhance the coparental relationship, parental mental health, parent-child relationship, and infant emotional and physiological regulation. They found that lower educated parents and families with a father who reported higher levels of insecure attachment in close relationships were more greatly positively influenced by the program, and conclude that coparenting may influence family relationships as well as parent/child well-being.
