Psychiatry - August 2008 - (Page 64) [journal watch] Synopsis: Researchers assessed parent and infant cortisol responses before and after the child’s confrontation with a stranger and a moving robot in a sample of 83 parents with 15month-old infants in an effort to replicate the findings of SethreHofstad et al. 2002. Psychoneuroendocrinology 27:731–747. They did replicate the findings by showing correlated parent-infant cortisol responses for sensitive parents but not for less sensitive parents, and conclude that an important connection between behavior and physiology in parent-infant interactions exists. [Epub ahead of print] Synopsis: To compare self-esteem in patients with avoidant personality disorder and those with borderline personality disorder, authors evaluated results of a self esteem questionnaire administered to individuals diagnosed with one or more personality disorders. They found that both groups of patients reported low levels of self esteem, but the avoidant personality disorder group reported lower selfesteem than the other group. They also found that patients with higher levels of depression reported lower levels of self-esteem, but that in both personality disorder groups the disorder pathology contributed to explaining variance in selfesteem beyond was accounted for by depression alone. Synopsis: To examine the crosssectional rate of borderline personality disorder in a general adult outpatient university clinic, authors screened 239 of the registered patients with a selfreport tool (SCID-II-PQ) and a diagnostic interview tool (DIB-R). They found that 72.4% of the patients were positive for borderline personality disorder on the self-report tool while 22.6% were positive on the DIB-R, and hypothesize on the reason for these results.
