Editor’s Message Issue Highlights, August 2008 Dear Colleagues: Welcome to the August issue of Psychiatry 2008. We begin with Sansone and Sansone’s Interface column. This month, they examine borderline personality disorder and propose that the number of symptoms is an unacknowledged but important diagnostic feature in borderline personality disorder. Next, this month’s Trend Watch examines the differences in prescribing patterns of different medical specialities with reference to short-acting versus long-acting medications for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A commentary is provided by Dr. Richard Weisler, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University. Parent-infant attachment is known to shape an infant’s future behavior. In his review article, Dr. James Swain utilizes brain imaging to explore this interaction to elucidate the neurological basis of human parental thoughts and behavior. Next, West and Friedman tackle the subject of female stalkers by reviewing what the research has shown about women who stalk. The authors also provide a discussion of women who stalk celebrities and of Hollywood’s portrayal of the female stalker. Younger patients with ADHD frequently present to hospital emergency departments with crises involving behavioral, legal, school or family conflict, and substance abuse issues. This setting is a good opportunity to make the diagnosis. In this month’s Psychotherapy Rounds article, Klykylo and Klykylo present the case of a 15-year-old patient to illustrate teaching points of managing ADHD when it presents in the emergency department. Next, obesity and sleep disturbance are common in the US population and may be part of the metabolic syndrome. Yarlagadda, et al., review sleep disturbances and obstructive sleep apnea in psychiatric patients, and particularly in those who are obese. They propose that screening for these issues should happen more commonly in psychiatric patient populations. In the latest installment of Update on Alzheimer’s Disease, Dr. Howe provides an interesting column focusing on improving the quality of life in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The article highlights several interventions psychiatrists can make to maximize the quality of life of patients who have AD from the time they first present with memory problems to the last stages of this disease. Finally, in this month’s installment of Research to Practice, Dr. Steve Targum interviews Alan J. Milbauer, a retired vice president from AstraZeneca.
