Psychiatry 2008 - September 2008 - (Page 52) Journal Watch [Epub ahead of print] Synopsis: Depression and cannabis use were repeatedly assessed in 1,494 youth (55% female) from 1985 (at age 6 years) through 2002 (at age 21 years). Researchers found that the estimated risk of depression for adolescents with cannabis problems was not significantly different from that for comparison adolescents for either gender. They conclude that the evidence does not support a causal association between adolescentonset cannabis problems and young adult depression. Psychol Addict Behav. 2008 Jun;22(2):186-197. Synopsis: Researchers used annual survey data for 951 children (441 girls) in grades 8 through 11 to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and substance use. They found, among other things, that individual changes in depressive symptoms and substance use across adolescence were positively associated for each type of substance. When the genders were analyzed, levels of depressive symptoms and substance use in early adolescence were positively associated for alcohol, marijuana, and cigarette use in girls, but a positive association was seen only for marijuana use in boys. The only predictive relationship found was that higher levels of depressive symptoms in early adolescence predicted less increase in alcohol use. Clinical characteristics and substance use comparing teens in a treatment cohort. Libby AM, Orton HD, Stover SK, Riggs PD. Addict Behav. 2005 Oct;30(9):1649-1662. Epub 2005 Aug 11. Synopsis: Tobacco use, alcohol use, and initiation of cannabis use and cannabis dependence were compared for two groups of adolescents (N=126) with cooccurring major depression and substance use disorder, those who experienced depression before 52 Psychiatry 2008 [ S E P T E M B E R ] initiating substance use (the depression-first group) and those who initiated substance use before experiencing depression (the substance-first group). Researchers found cannabis dependence to be significantly more prevalent in the depression-first group than in the substance-first group. They conclude that although there may be differences in the developmental path toward comorbid depression and substance use disorders, measures of dependence and severity appear similar.
