Synopsis: To examine whether antipsychotic drug prophylaxis reduces the incidence and severity of postoperative delirium in at-risk elderly patients, researchers conducted a randomized, controlled trial to compare the incidence of postoperative delirium in a group of at-risk patients over 70 years of age who were either administered oral haloperidol 0.5mg TID or placebo. Based on the results, they conclude that adjunctive low-dose haloperidol prophylaxis reduces delirium severity, duration, and subsequent hospitalization length in elderly atrisk patients.
