Synopsis: This article is based on the results of a multidisciplinary conference held by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. Authors discuss the role of anxiety disorders in medical illness, including irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic pain. PMID: 18433653 There are no associations between IgE levels and symptoms of anxiety and depression in the adult female general population. The Hordaland Health Study (HUSK). Synopsis: Because of reports of anxiety and depression in patients with asthma, eczema and rhinitis, researchers examined whether an association exists between anxiety/depression and IgE in 374 female participants in a populationbased general health study in Norway. They found no association between case level or symptom load of anxiety/depression and total or allergen-specific IgE. Authors conclude that this study produced no evidence that IgE is the underlying etiological factor for any associations between anxiety/depression and asthma, rhinitis and eczema. J Psychosom Res. 2008 Jan;64(1):33–40. 54 Psychiatry 2008 [ O C T O B E R ] Synopsis: To study the relative contributions to physical health of combat trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), researchers analyzed data from an epidemiological study of Australian Vietnam veterans. They found that while PTSD was associated with a range of illness conditions consistent with altered inflammatory responsiveness— asthma, eczema, arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders and hypertension—combat exposure was less strongly associated with physical health outcomes. Epub 2007 Dec 3. Synopsis: To evaluate the impact of depression and panic disorder on outcomes of primary care patients with asthma over the course of a year, authors analyzed the results of self-report questionnaires completed by 256 asthma patients from 43 primary care practices, 185 of whom completed the same questionnaire one year later. Based on the results, authors conclude that even with low rates of hospitalization and emergency visits, health outcomes for patients with asthma are substantially impacted by psychiatric comorbidity. PMID: 18061424 The prevalence of DSM-IV anxiety and depressive disorders in youth with asthma compared with controls. Katon W, Lozano P, Russo J, et al. J Adolesc Health. 2007 Nov;41(5):455–463. Epub 2007 Sep 4. Synopsis: Researchers used telephone interviews with 781 teenagers (11–17 years) with asthma and 598 controls to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders in this group and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with having one or more anxiety/depressive disorders in this group. They found that the teenagers with asthma exhibited almost twice the prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders compared to controls. Factors associated with these disorders included more recent asthma diagnosis, more impairment on the asthma physical health scale, and increased externalizing behaviors. PMID: 18439704 Quality of informed consent for invasive procedures. Brezis M, Israel S, WeinsteinBirenshtock A, et al. Int J Qual Health Care. 2008 Oct;20(5):352–357. Epub 2008 Jul 14. Synopsis: Authors surveyed hospitalized patients to assess the quality of informed consent among hospitalized patients undergoing invasive procedures, and patient preferences about decision-making. They found that half of the patients did not recall receiving explanations about risks and two-third did not remember discussion of alternative 54
